A message from the President

Hello everyone,
The MAWAI committee has been very busy planning the events for 2010 and March is already proving to be a busy month packed full of activities. We will start with our traditional monthly get together for a drink (or two) at the Pontoon Bar, Cockle Bay (www.pontoonbar.com) on Thursday 4 March 2010 from 7PM onwards. Come along to meet other Mexicans living in Sydney, practice your Spanish, catch up with friends and make new ones….any excuse for a drink and a chat is a good one.
We will have our first full blown Mexican Fiesta on 26 March 2010 at the Wallaby Room (upstairs from the Pontoon) with Mariachis, music, great food, drinks and lots of surprises. Get in soon as tickets are selling fast.
We are also very proud to support the Sydney Action for Juarez (SAfJ) Group who are participating in the International Women’s Day march to be held in the City on 6 March 2010. SAfJ joins the global initiative (Mexico, USA, Spain, Argentina and Canada) to raise awareness about the continuing violence and brutality against women in Juarez City in Mexico. MAWAI joins SAfJ and we express our solidarity with the Mexican women who have organized, held marches, planted pink crosses in the killing fields and who continue to struggle for an end to the violence in the city.
In order to strengthen the awareness message, SAfJ have organized A CONCERT FOR JUAREZ that will be held at 7:30PM on Saturday 13 March 2010 at the Uniting Church Hall at 395 Oxford St, Paddington. The concert will include Mexican music, the Mexican dance group, rappers, signer and Latin Dance. Mexican food and drinks will be available for sale at the event. Concert tickets $20/$15 (concession). For more information on the march, how to make a donation, buy tickets or concert details please visit the Sydney Action for Juarez Facebook page here or contact Rosarela on 02 9698 9949 or rosarela@hotmail.com or Liliana on 0450 376 672 or mar_decobo@hotmail.com.
