The Mexican Community in Sydney celebrated the traditional Mexican Independence Day on Saturday the 19th of September 2009. The Mexican Australian Welfare Association (MAWAI) organised the event and chose the Randwick Town Hall for this occasion and catered a large party with a sligthly different celebration format compared to previous years. This time it was completely family orientated. The event was designed in a way that families had the opportunity to experience a little bit of that Mexican “Kermesse Folklore” which is traditional in Mexico every September.
Among the activities that the children enjoyed were the bingo, darts with balloons and a very picturesque pinata decorated with the colours green, white and red.
Once the kids had fun with their games organised by members of MAWAI, it was the time to start the proper Independence Day Celebration activities so a 9-member Mariachi Band opened officially the “Grito” celebration with an hour of traditional Mariachi songs. The Mexican Dance Group delighted all present with a selection of Mexican Folklore dances too.
This paved the way for everybody joining the dance floor so by 10:00pm everybody started to dance to the rythm of Latin Company.
Every Independence Day Celebration needs a “Grito” ceremony and this year Hugo Pacheco had the honour. Thanks Hugo for one of the best “Gritos” ever made in Sydney!
MAWAI would like to extend its thanks to all sponsors and volunteers who contributed to make this party a huge success and particularly to Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc for their very kind donation of Sol beers which were made available for this very special occasion.
